This means that the craftsman hollows out and carves a block of wood by rotating it to achieve this final result. This is also the reason why the shades from one beer mug to another can vary, depending on the wood grain or knots, for example.
Once the container is carved, the craftsman only needs to attach the handle (unlike a pint which doesn't have one). He then has to sand the whole thing and then protect the wood with food-safe varnish. It's a real work of art .
