of reading
Welcome to you, dear reader, because if you have arrived at this article, it is for 3 good reasons:
- You like beer and that's good because I do too.
- You want to have fun because the title of this article caught your attention.
- You are curious and contrary to the expression, I consider that curiosity is anything but a bad fault.
Now that I've given you a little ointment and brushed you in the direction of your hair, I can get to work and tell you what it's going to be about! 😁
I've tried to gather a lot of information about beer, picked up here and there. You'll have plenty to educate yourself with these 10 funny stories and anecdotes about beer. Always keep in mind that everything is true , which makes them much more interesting! Yes, beer has been stirring up passions for thousands of years already . 😍
When you marry your daughter off, you have to rinse your son-in-law's throat for a month!
Imagine you're a resident of, let's say, Babylon ! And let's also say it all takes place... 4,000 years ago (to round things up). You're the proud parent of a daughter, and that's it, you've finally found the perfect son-in-law to marry her off. Okay, we know the marriage standards of the time were unusual, but we won't dwell on the details.
The wedding is going perfectly, but it turns out you have to respect a special custom. In fact , 4,000 years ago in Babylon, the bride's father had to provide his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink for a month after the wedding! 😅
For those who don't know, mead is a honey beer. Needless to say, the men have been fans of their local beer for ages, so the son-in-law was quite happy about this tradition!
The Babylonians based their calendar on the moon, like many other peoples. Because their calendar was based on the moon, this period was called the Honey Month . So you will understand that nowadays we call it the Honeymoon .
What has changed now, however, is that I would strongly advise the groom not to drink beer until he can't drink anymore on his honeymoon. That could cause him some problems, wouldn't it! 😆
When you didn't have a thermometer, you used your thumb!
I hope you didn't have the bad idea of believing that it's going to be a matter of taking your temperature with your thumb and having to put it in your...well, in short, that's not it at all! 😝
Come on, we're here to educate ourselves, damn it! 😇
I don't know if you've ever had the opportunity to brew your own beer, but you should know that you need to add yeast when brewing. As a reminder, yeast is used in the fermentation process. It helps transform the sugar added to the wort into two components: ethanol, or alcohol, and carbon dioxide. Yeast is fragile and must be mixed at the right temperature.
Chronologically, brewers arrived long before the invention of the thermometer, as you might expect. They realized long ago that wort temperature had an impact on the addition of yeast. The simplest way for them to control the temperature was to use their skin, more precisely their thumb.
Currently, it's mostly parents who control the temperature of the milk they give their babies on their hands. The goal is different, but the principle remains the same!
The practice of English brewers using their thumbs gave rise to the expression “Rule of thumb,” which can be translated literally as “The rule of thumb.” This doesn’t mean much in the language of Molière. A more meaningful translation would be “By the thumb” or “By the ladle.”
How would you like to sign a 9,000-year lease to launch your brewery?
In 1759, an English entrepreneur was looking for premises to launch his own beer. He was drawn to an abandoned brewery in Dublin. This budding brewer didn't have enough money to buy it, so he opted to rent it. He was so confident in his future success that he signed a 9,000-year lease with the owner at the time!
Little did he know at the time that his beer would become world famous many years later. This man was Arthur Guiness , and that same year he launched his famous Guiness Stout .
Warm up your beer!
Did you know that some beers must be served in glasses? Like wine, beer must be served at the right temperature based on its characteristics. White wine is best enjoyed chilled, while red wine is usually drunk at room temperature.
It's a good thing we're talking about cuts because it just so happens that, by chance, we offer several on our site:
You are probably aware that a beer that is too cold loses its aromas and flavor.
This is especially true for strong beers like Triple or IPA, for example. Serving this type of beer in a glass allows the drinker to warm up their drink with the warmth of their hands . It's a good thing we're talking about IPAs, because we're going to talk about them right away.
Why IPAs Are Usually Strong Beers: IPA History
A quick history reminder: IPA (India Pale Ale) beer was born during the colonial era of the British Empire. It goes without saying that the English are rather fond of beer. Needless to say, British soldiers were no exception to this rule—quite the opposite, in fact.
England colonized India. To maintain order within this vast territory, Her Majesty needed a military presence there. What better way to motivate and reward your troops than by sending some of the country's fine beer, right? Except that getting beer from England to India was a very long journey.
The IPA name actually comes from a recipe specifically created to withstand this journey. The English realized that by significantly increasing the hops and alcohol content in their beer, it provided two crucial benefits :
- Have a beer that still has flavor upon arrival. Hops lose their potency over the months.
- Having a drink with enough alcohol to satisfy thirsty soldiers. Alcohol thus had two advantages. On the one hand, it allowed for better preservation of the beer. On the other hand, it was the alcohol contained in the beer that allowed the soldiers to get drunk and endure their living conditions.
The soldiers in the garrison grew accustomed to this specific bitter taste of very hoppy beer and the recipe was preserved for everyday consumption. From necessity born invention, as they say! 😉 So now you understand why IPAs are so alcoholic, even if you can dose them much less if necessary.
Our favorite YouTuber, Une Bière et Jivay, debunks my argument that "over-hopping" is the origin of IPA, but anyway, each to their own! His video is short and concise:
Cannabis and hops are cousins so can I smoke hops?
Ha ha ha, I got you with that title, didn't I? 😂
Well, if you want to try rolling a hop joint, nothing's stopping you! In my opinion, smoking hops must be so bitter that it should quickly calm you down!
A 2002 study demonstrated that the molecular structure of hops and cannabis is particularly similar . They are part of the Cannabinaceae family.
It turns out that hops, like cannabis, can have a therapeutic role. I won't dwell on the subject of cannabis, as you can find plenty of articles on the internet for yourself.
Hops are particularly known for their relaxing, sleep-inducing, and analgesic properties. They have long been used in naturopathy and homeopathy.
When you drink cheap beer, you drink rice!
Oh dear... Do you know supermarket beers ? And if I tell you about those good old 24 or 12 packs often bearing the label " luxury beer ", do you know what I'm talking about? Besides, this "luxury" label always made me laugh because that's one of the ways you can tell it's cheap beer !
It's funny, but I think every beer drinker has had the opportunity to taste one at least once. That said, when you don't have a lot of money and there are several of you, it's still helpful. I think I might as well be honest! 😅
I don't know if you're aware of the basic ingredients of beer: water, malt, hops, yeast, and sugar. It turns out that our dear manufacturers, and in our specific case, large commercial breweries, always do their best to save on raw materials. Some of these breweries use cheap grains like rice to convert sugar into alcohol!
On the other hand, keep in mind that craft brewers almost never do this. There's a reason why craft beers are so much better than national and international industrial brands . It's the "magic" of industrialization, as they say...
I did manage to find a counter-example to what I just said, but it's still very rare:
Would you like to drink a beer from your enemy's head?
Strange idea, isn't it? It might seem less strange if I tell you that you're a Viking. Yes, it seems that this ancient Nordic people were adept at this practice. The Vikings used the skulls of their enemies as containers to drink their beer . It was a way to command respect from others and to regain the strength of one's former adversary.
If you're a fan of Vikings and...skulls lol, I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our Viking Skull Tankard:
We can also make a connection with the American Indians. When hunting bison, they customarily cut open the animal's torso to eat its still-warm heart. In this way, they gave thanks to the animal and hoped to appropriate its strength.
That's not all, because you should also learn that the Vikings consumed a very special beer called Aul or Ale. After drinking it, they went onto the battlefield without fear or dread. So they went guns blazing without their armor or even their shirts!
By launching into combat, these warriors entered a sort of trance and murderous rage towards their enemies. From this state a word was born. In Norse, " Berserk " literally means "bear shirt." The Viking without his shirt but with chest hair in the wind was like a bear unleashing his fury. Be careful in case a friend offers you a Scandinavian beer, you never know! 😆
With this tankard, you normally run no risk other than having a real Viking beer tankard !
She's great, I want to see her!
Brew your beer with a 4000-year-old recipe given by a god!
Beer has been a part of human history for millennia. Archaeologists have unearthed extensive evidence from various cultures and sites. Most of this evidence consists of images of people brewing, storing, and drinking beer. The ancient world lies beneath our feet, replete with ruined cities and forgotten tombs scattered throughout the world.
A few years ago, archaeologists discovered a clay tablet. Analysis of the writing revealed that it was Mesopotamian and dated to 4,000 years ago. Scientists then set about translating it to decipher what appeared to be words and numbers.
They eventually realized that this was a beer recipe. This didn't intrigue them at the time, as beer was ubiquitous in the ancient world. However, they realized that this recipe was presented as having been passed down by the god Enki himself!
This god was powerful and “multifunctional” because he was:
- Master of Groundwater
- Master of Wisdom
- Master of Arts and Techniques
- Master of Magic
- Master of Exorcism
If you think about it, all these qualities fit pretty well with beer. Brewing beer is an art that requires a certain technique . The main ingredient of beer is fresh water. Making beer teaches you wisdom and always has a magical side. Finally, beer and its benefits, when consumed in moderation, can exorcise certain ailments.
You saw that, I managed to place all these words to relate them to beer! Yes I am proud of myself and I allow myself to underline it! 😆
Despise beer and you will be a heretic!
As you know, beer is integrated into most of our cultures and is part of our daily lives. You may know that the early Church declared beer, or more generally alcohol, to be a gift from God. It was fitting for man to use this gift and enjoy it.
Based on this principle, beer is therefore good for humans . The Church, of course, allowed its faithful to choose whether they wanted to drink it or not. On the other hand, it was strictly forbidden to despise alcohol in itself. This amounted to despising this gift that God had given them.
If you got the bad idea of wanting to criticize alcohol, you were immediately considered a heretic! At best, it resulted in the loss of what few civil rights you had. A little less luck and it was banishment. And downright unlucky, it was a death sentence!
