Everything You Need to Know About Bottle Openers

of reading

The bottle opener is one of those everyday objects we all have at home, most often in the kitchen cutlery drawer. It's become so commonplace that you may never have stopped to wonder who invented it, why, and how it evolved.

Yet, like all the objects that surround us, someone invented it one day. He certainly didn't think that this product would flood the world, and yet that's what happened. Come on, I'm taking you on this crazy adventure about bottle openers . 😇

What is a bottle opener and how does it work?

During summer vacations or at work, when it's hot or even when it's cold, there's nothing better than refreshing drinks to quench your thirst. You'll notice that you'll very often have a bottle opener close to you. Whether it's soda, cola like Pepsi or Coca-Cola , lemonades, regular mineral water or... beer of course. 🍺🍻

These drinks come in different packaging: glass , plastic or cans . No particular problem opening the last two, except for the glass container. 🙎

How to uncap a bottle?

So you'll regularly face the same problem: the cap won't give (well, yes, that's normal, it's a capsule ...) and won't open. The question is how to open a bottle of cola (or beer, editor's note! #IactasifIampartofabigpressservice) and quench your thirst?

Another name for the bottle opener is the bottle opener . The bottle opener is a specialized piece of equipment designed to remove metal caps from the top of bottles. The bottle opener is usually placed on top of the bottle, with part of it resting under the rim of the cap.

The cap, called the capsule, comes off when pressure is exerted by the bottle opener , which uses the center of the cap as a fulcrum. You will have 2 types of bottle openers:

The best compromise is the beer bottle opener, so you're sure to have everything at hand:

Caps are also called screw caps, but don't worry, it's normal if you don't know this term because almost no one uses it.

You are a very smart person, so you have understood that bottle openers are used to open bottles ! 🔓👐 😂

History of the bottle opener

The name of the person associated with the invention of the simple bottle opener remains unknown. The first reference to a device resembling a modern corkscrew is found in the book The History of Wine , written by the renowned wine expert and connoisseur Hugh Johnson.

In the book, the author gives the corkscrew a very amusing name, namely "a stainless steel bit for pulling corks from bottles." The book was published in 1681. It's an interesting book if you're a wine fan because a lot of things haven't changed much, although...

Lol, the proof is in this bottle opener that is both magnetized to the fridge and detachable to open all your bottles:

However, there is a legend that the first corkscrew was invented in 1790 in England. Ironically, according to this version, the corkscrew was invented by a master gunsmith... But then who should we believe, right? Who benefits from the crime? It was rather 100 years later that things got serious. 😁

Indeed, many other bottle openers of this type were used from 1891 or after 1892, depending on the version. American William Painter created modern stoppers for sealing glass bottles, to be exact. At the time, he was primarily looking to replace the timeless cork stoppers and their arch-enemies, screw caps.

William Painter, inventor of the capsule and bottle opener

The principle remained the same: finding the best way to seal the container to be airtight. After many attempts, he finally designed the capsule . It wasn't exactly like the one we have today because there was a small cork disc under the metal, but the idea was still there: to encircle the neck with a piece of metal. 😊

Do you know the expression " Out of necessity comes invention "? In fact, these are two inventions that must have been made one after the other. Good old William had to find a tool to remove what he had just invented from the bottle. So, it was the bottle opener, in a version more or less similar to the one we know today.

How to open a bottle with a bottle opener?

Essentially, bottle openers ( opening utensils ) act like levers. Most common bottle openers rely on applying force to the opener, which then directs that force toward the bottle cap to break the cap's seal and lift it. This is the principle of leverage , the same one that has been used since the dawn of time to lift something heavy.

Come on boy! 😆

Principle of leverage to open a bottle

The difference with a lifting lever is that the bottle opener does not work with a counterweight , it is the force exerted on it which will bend the capsule and allow the bottle to be opened. 😊

Opening a bottle with a wall-mounted bottle opener is even easier. A master sommelier uses multifunctional kitchen utensils with a good grip, he masters the art of opening beer bottles or a good bottle of good wine. In your case, simply place the bottle in the wall-mounted bottle opener so that the sharp part of the opener (also called the claw) is under the cap. Then, pull down; the wall-mounted bottle opener is fixed to the wall and will not move.

The principle of the wall-mounted bottle opener is the opposite of the manual bottle opener because this time it's the bottle that will be your lever. You wedge the cap, push down and that's it. Really child's play! 😉

On the other hand, opening a wine bottle cork is a culinary art. When sharing wine with friends who are passionate and wine lovers, there can be a whole opening ritual. Wine accessories like the double-lever bottle opener or lever corkscrew allow you to open the cork of your choice: champagne , white wine, red wine, champagne, or beer. This way, the tasting will begin effortlessly.

Sommeliers and bartenders use a plethora of multifunctional kitchen utensils with a good grip. Here are a few: Laguiole sommelier corkscrew, keychain opener for uncorking a bottle, automatic bottle opener , lemonade knives, foil cutter, electric corkscrew , pourer for wine glasses and beer glasses. As an individual, you don't necessarily need all of these, but they exist.

What are the benefits of a bottle opener?

How to choose the right bottle opener?

Some consider it an ergonomic gadget because it comes in different shapes, materials, and colors. Randomly: wood and metal, gold, bronze, chrome steel, basalt, zinc alloy, wooden handle, olive wood, oak, silver stainless steel, chrome metal, silicone, anodized aluminum, aluminum handle, aluminum alloy, graphite, etc. Yes, all of that!

There are even automatic bottle openers! Just press the cap and it opens by itself:

There are several different models of these bottle openers . In the professional environment, the wall-mounted bottle opener is usually located at the back of bars or near tables, while the hand-held bottle openers are usually located and used by the bartender or sommelier.

In homes, a wall-mounted bottle opener is placed on the fridge if it is magnetized or nailed to the wall. A traditional bottle opener is usually stored in a kitchen drawer or near the bar.

You can find models from different manufacturers. They differ not only in appearance but also in ease of use. Their strength affects the utensil's durability, although they may vary from one type to another.

  • Blade Bottle Opener : Looks like a flat steel blade about 4 cm wide and 16 cm long with a thumb hole at one end and a slot for placing under bottle caps at the other end. It is very popular among bartenders in Canada and the United States due to its portability and ease of use.
  • Ring bottle opener : It is used exclusively by waiters who can wear it like a ring. The bottle opener can handle any bottle. With its help, it will open the desired drink quickly, easily, safely, and efficiently, allowing waiters to open bottles for their customers without having to return to the bar each time to get a bottle opener.

Okay, here's a quick refresher quiz: So, the modern bottle opener is over 130 years old. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since its first versions, but it remains just as useful over time. Despite the advances in plastic caps, the capsule has held its own, and the bottle opener is far from having said its last word.

The bottle opener allows us to uncap our bottles easily and effortlessly, without the risk of breaking the neck of the bottle. This prevents you from ending up with pieces of glass in your drink, which is not very pleasant and especially dangerous!

You might as well opt for a wooden coaster bottle opener that also acts as a fridge magnet!

It's instantly recognizable, and I think it's almost impossible to find someone on this planet who hasn't used one. A universal everyday tool, it remains our ally for all our next aperitifs. So let's give Caesar what belongs to Caesar, the bottle opener is essential in our everyday lives.
