How to Draw a Beer Mug?
of reading
The beer mug fascinates many of us and budding artists can get caught up in the game of wanting to draw a beer mug . Drawing a mug is one thing but you necessarily have to start from a specific model because there are all kinds.
Grab your pencil sharpener, pencil, pen, spindle, paintbrush, markers and paint and let's go!
Draw a glass beer mug
In the collective unconscious, most people imagine drawing a glass beer mug . The most frequently drawn model is the famous Mass, the 1 L German beer mug . It is mainly favored for its aesthetic side.
Indeed, all the small circles present in the glass allow for striking plays of light and contrast. For your information, these circles are called eyes in German (Augen), but they don't only have an aesthetic function. They mainly serve to add strength to the mug because they reinforce the glass.
The following beer mug drawing video comes from our YouTube channel and you can admire Marcello Barenghi's performance:
This 4-minute video is sped up because it takes 6 hours and 20 minutes to achieve this stunning result ! However, it already gives you an idea of all the different techniques and layers you'll need to use if you want to achieve the same thing.
The basics of drawing a beer mug
The main fundamentals are:
- The glass mug with its handle
- The beer that fills the tankard
- The foam (which often overflows)
Depending on what you use to draw and, of course, your drawing skills , you can achieve different results. I recommend starting with basic versions and then working your way up. Art can be learned!
You must have taken art classes when you were in middle school, and drawing techniques can vary from one teacher to another. The following examples will get you back in the swing of things!
Examples of beer mug designs
Here's what it might look like initially. You can easily create this drawing using a simple program like Paint or by taking colored pencils and a piece of paper :
Next, you'll start refining your line and drawing more details. This is still very basic, but it's already less messy than the first drawing:
For this example, it is now a question of giving volumes and perspective , in 3 dimensions. The handle now has a relief and the lines are more worked and finer. You can very well do your drawing in black and white at this stage.
For this penultimate example, I'm going to use the drawing I chose for this article because I think it's already a very good compromise. The volumes are there and there's already a play of light :
If you get to this last stage, it proves that you are really talented because I think you can hardly do better. The contrasts are perfect , the colors are beautiful and the whole thing is almost a masterpiece! The play of light and shine makes the drawing very realistic (even if we are not yet at Marcello's level!).
Finally, you can also use drawing or photo editing software like Photoshop or Canva. The result will be in a different style, more contemporary obviously and also simpler, but nevertheless it can do the trick.
As you can see, drawing a mug isn't that easy. It will take time to achieve a successful result . I tried to include examples that reflect different levels of pencil skill, even though modern tools allow us to do everything with a computer.
