What Original Gift to Give a Man for Valentine's Day?

of reading

Every year, if you're in a relationship, you ask yourself the same questions: What gift can I give this year to the person I love? What will really please them? Finding an idea isn't always easy.

In this article, I'll try to guide you through a successful Valentine's Day. Here are the best ideas for every budget! Here's a hint: I think a beer mug as a Valentine's Day gift would be a great idea!

History of Valentine's Day

A Roman story

Valentine's Day Roman holiday

That's all well and good, but first, it might be a good idea to give you a little historical background. You've probably already asked yourself this question: what is Valentine's Day ? Where does it come from, and who invented it?

In fact, it all began in the Roman era , more precisely in the 3rd century. At that time, we were under the reign of Emperor Claudius II . As you know, each Roman period had its share of wars and conflicts.

The emperor had great difficulty in increasing the size of his legions. Without anyone really knowing why, he assumed that if so few people came to swell his ranks, it was because the men were very attached to their family home . This is not entirely false, you might say, because once embarked in the legion, a soldier had to leave his wife and child for months or even years.

This dear Claudius inherited a nickname following a decision he made after realizing this. Claudius the Cruel therefore decided to formally prohibit anyone from marrying throughout Roman territory. Don't forget that during this period the Roman Empire became Christian. The Romans had thus abandoned their ancient gods in favor of the monotheistic religion, Christianity. Marriage thus became an institution and people could not form a couple without first getting married.

Church wedding

Following Emperor Claudius's decision, a priest, like Grandpa, decided to continue organizing and celebrating weddings in the utmost secrecy. I'll give you a thousand guesses, I'll give you a hundred guesses, this good little priest's name was Valentin.

Of course, a priest who continued to officiate at weddings even though it was forbidden throughout the country eventually became known. Indeed, people came from all over the Empire to get married in secret. It didn't take long for Claudius the Cruel to find out .

The emperor's reaction was unequivocal. He ordered the priest's immediate arrest from the height of his omnipotence and had him sentenced to prison.

While Valentine was serving his sentence, he sympathized with his guard . One day, the guard's daughter came to visit her father. It turned out that this girl, Julia, was blind. The priest sympathized with this girl much more than with her father, in the end.

They began to develop a mutual romantic feeling . Legend has it that Valentin's unconditional love for Julia restored her sight . This kind of miracle rarely goes unnoticed, and the news spread quickly. Good old Claude, still him, after the news, of course.

You should know that although the Roman people were predominantly Christian, the emperor did not share this conviction at all. The fact that, along with this priest, whom he had sent to prison for disobedience to his authority, also performed a miracle from his cell, the cup was full.

His decision was therefore final: the priest Valentin of Terni was thus condemned to death by beheading.

Unfortunately for him, Valentin didn't perform a miracle for himself... He did, however, have time to send his beloved, before being executed, a sweet little note signed "Your Valentine." If that isn't love, eh!

Almost three centuries later, in 498, the then Pope Gelas I decided to designate February 14 as the feast of Saint Valentine. Versions differ as to which Valentine was specifically chosen. Indeed, several Valentines appear to have been in the running for this commemoration: our dear priest, a bishop of the same name, and a third namesake who remains relatively unknown.

Pope and priest

Most likely, the Pope chose Valentine of Terni as the symbol for this feast. He considered him a martyr, and the recognized miracle of restoring his beloved's sight were two sufficient reasons.

The choice of date, however, was not random. Historically, in Roman times, a festival was already planned for this date. It was the Feast of Lupercalia , which took place from February 13 to 15.

This festival was part of the pagan heritage of the Roman Empire before its conversion to Christianity. Indeed, to honor the god of flocks and shepherds, it was customary to sacrifice a goat to honor this god. Not always the perfect gift in certain circumstances...

As with many pagan festivals, the custom was to replace them with new Christian festivals. This is how Valentine's Day came to be celebrated on February 14. The symbol of the priest in love who performs a miracle for his beloved and is condemned to death in return was the perfect example for a lovers' festival.

Valentine's Day as Reimagined by English Aristocrats

Around 800 years later, a custom gradually emerged in England. It involved pairing a pair of young people of the opposite sex for an entire day. The game consisted mainly of them showing courtesies to each other, such as exchanging sweet nothings or small gifts.

Custom of Valentinage in the English aristocracy

Obviously, this custom, known as Valentine's Day , originated in the aristocratic milieu, not among the common people. It was far too chic, you see!

The customs and traditions of a court often tend to spread from one court to another. This is how this custom arrived at various courts in Europe, notably the court of Savoy. The custom of valentinage was associated with the respective sending of poems declaring sweet nothings and gallantries.

Over the centuries, this custom gradually evolved. Initially, it was mainly a matter of exchanging courteous attention, but it gradually transformed into an exchange of loving attention. So, love was beginning to be in the air!

The Modern Era of Valentine's Day

This is how Valentine's Day took shape and became what we know today. It was the Americans, who are very fond of commercial holidays , who participated in its development and in establishing the practice of giving gifts for the occasion.

I'm not telling you anything new by pointing out how US culture permeates us. Thanksgiving is the only holiday that will never take root in our French-speaking world!

Valentine's Day comes from the United States

It's no wonder then that this holiday has taken off in our country too, as you well know there's a huge business around this holiday. You'd better know the person you're in a relationship with very well if you're planning on not giving them a gift or at least a little something special! At the same time, can you blame them for wanting to celebrate love? 💑

How to please your loved one?

Well, that's all very nice, but you have to tell yourself that I'm being nice about this whole beautiful story, but if you've arrived at this blog article, it's because you're looking for ways to please your other half.

That's the paradox of this holiday because on paper, you could legitimately say that you're the person who knows him best. Cupid didn't shoot his arrows by chance, and Valentine's Day is always an opportunity to declare your love. However, if you're reading this, it's because you're a little stuck. Finding a gift for men isn't that complicated!

To please a man

Well yes, this damn holiday falls every year and barely less than 2 months after Christmas. You were already very happy to have found nice things to offer for Christmas and now you find yourself having to give him another gift ! Life can be unfair and cruel sometimes, right? 😂

And if, in your misfortune, he was born at the beginning of the year, you're in for a hell of a combo for 3 months! 😩

If that's the case, take things on the bright side by telling yourself that you'll be fine for 9 months. 😉

So, let's get back to the point, and more specifically, to our gifts, because that's what it's all about. Everyone is looking for the same thing: to please, and ideally without breaking the bank.

Generally, there are two categories of gifts: tangible and intangible.

Intangible gifts for men

The good meal

Valentine's Day Restaurant

Let's start with the intangibles. A classic is going to a nice restaurant with your loved one. It's an opportunity to be together, just the two of you, to eat well and drink good wine, while avoiding the chore we all know of deciding what to eat tonight. Do you know this old refrain?

"What do you want to eat?"

I don't know, and you?

Well… I don’t know either!”

We're giving ourselves a night off, no hassle over the meal, no dishes to do, and what's more, we're both served. Royal. Another variation is to have a meal delivered. That's cool too, but we're still in the same setting, at home.

A naughty moment

Sensuality for Valentine's Day

When it comes to intangible gifts, since we're talking about Valentine's Day, it might seem natural to want to add a little spice to your sex life. It's not for nothing that some say that sex is the glue that binds a couple together.

Valentine's Day can therefore be the occasion, or even the pretext, to organize a small "party" that's out of the ordinary. This has the advantage of costing you nothing and, correct me if I'm wrong, of pleasing both parties.

On the other hand, don't count on me to give you naughty ideas , I think you'll find plenty on certain specialized sites! I can, however, only suggest listening to him in the preceding months in order to potentially consider something new or different. This can also be an opportunity to satisfy a fantasy of his or even yours.

A moment for two

To finish on the intangible, I can include everything that is special activities as a couple:

romantic weekend,

spa afternoon

couple massage in an institute

sporting activity for two

Romantic couple Valentine's Day

The idea is to have fun and spend time together to disconnect from everyday life. I think we're all the same: the days follow one another and are all the same. Let's face it, our daily lives are pretty routine.

A Valentine's Day gift can be an opportunity to treat yourself to a break or a mini-vacation as a couple. I emphasize the "as a couple" because, as I've already said, even if you have children, it's essential to continue nurturing your relationship as a couple.

Material gifts for men

Now we come to the material gifts section. You're tired of him giving you a box of chocolates every year with an eternal bouquet of flowers. You'll also notice that he often has trouble remembering the flowers you like (at least I do)! 😆

Don't hesitate to leave him your little gift ideas, in a more or less subtle way. Male subtlety being what it is, insist heavily if necessary: post-it notes on the fridge, little notes in his pockets or wallets, etc.

But what about him then? What gift for a man could please him? What could be nice to give him for Valentine's Day without it being too cheesy?

My best advice is to think with your heart . If you really want to touch him, you have to aim right, that is, what he likes.

The flowers

Valentine's Day flower bouquet

Yes, you read that right, I'm talking about giving flowers to a man! It's a classic gift for women, a bouquet of flowers, but it can also be an original gift for a man. Don't forget that times are changing, gender equality is "theoretically" present, but some clichés die hard. Why only reserve flowers for women? Doesn't a man have the right to be given a beautiful bouquet? 💐

Forget this idea if your man is as sensitive as a prison door, even if giving him flowers can also be an opportunity to surprise him. Yes, there's a good chance he'll give you some too, and it can be a bit comical to imagine you both holding the offered bouquet in your hand.

It's a fact: in the vast majority of cases, men often settle for the bare necessities. And even then, when they think about it! 😂

The gift that stands out: men's decoration

A restaurant is nice, but it's a classic, almost a must-do, even if it's always enjoyable. What Valentine's Day gift can you find that will make him remember it and think of you when he uses it?

Well, yes, the male brain is made like that: when we're given a gift, we immediately judge whether it will be useful or not. I think most of us are much less sensitive to decor, for example. Or it has to be decor that reminds him of something he likes.

Decorating is generally a girl's thing, but giving her the opportunity to add her own personal touch should make her happy. Something that's a bit boyish! We're the males of the house after all (now you understand the lion image)!

The Male for Valentine's Day

When you clicked on this article, you probably saw that our site is called Beer Mug. This likely influenced your choice of click because you were looking for a Valentine's Day gift for men and you clicked on a site that references beer. This means that subconsciously, you already have a little idea in mind.

Actually, I can let you in on a secret. 80% of our customers are actually women. According to the feedback we get, a good majority of them buy from our site to give gifts. As one of our slogans says, "A beer doesn't last long, but a gift about beer does!"

It's a simple phrase, but nonetheless particularly true. When we created our site, we indirectly wanted to extend the temporary nature of beer. That's why we started offering more and more products related to our beloved beverage.

Does your man love beer? Then why not give him a decorative item?

I'm pretty sure you have the final say on decorating your home. Giving him a beer themed decor item would not only make him happy, but he'll also feel like he has a say (just a little, of course 😉 ) on the matter.

Clock, poster, metal plate, blanket, sign, flag, doormat, bath mat, etc. You're spoiled for choice in our decoration category . You also have the huge advantage of being able to let him add his personal touch, while choosing what you're going to give him yourself. Pretty clever, right?

Here we go for a few examples from our hundreds of decorative items:

Please him every day with a nice mug of beer

Drinking a beer from a bottle, okay, when you're 18 it doesn't bother you. However, as the years go by, you think it might still be nice to have a nice object to drink your beer from. Here again, this gift touches a man because you know he'll think of you with each new beer he drinks from it. And it's more manly than a mug with love hearts on it!

We offer about 60 beer mugs on our website. It would be incredible if you couldn't find one he might like.

Give him a nice piece of clothing

When you love beer, you might want to say it clearly. That's where our t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, bucket hats, shorts, aprons, and, to a lesser extent, costumes come in. All in men's sizes, of course.

Tell yourself that he'll be proud to show his T-shirt to all his friends next time, and as a bonus, he'll point out the fact that you gave it to him. His friends will think he's lucky to be with a woman who understands him and listens to the things he likes.

2nd gift idea, the costume. If you take a look at our costumes, you'll see that we offer Oktoberfest costumes for men and women. Giving him a costume for Valentine's Day and telling him that you'll be going to the beer festival in October can be a very good idea! And if you get the women's version, chances are he won't be able to resist you because it's just the right amount of sexy!

An original bottle opener

Still with the idea of giving him a useful gift, giving him a cool bottle opener that you like too can be fun. You can tell yourself that there are probably sexier gifts, but believe me, a man will surely prefer that to yet another V-neck sweater or other classic gift!

It always comes back to the same idea: to please with something useful. Have you had an old bottle opener for ages, recovered from who knows where? Do you open your beers with a corkscrew? Come on, Monsieur deserves a nice bottle opener considering all the beers he opens each year!

An original object

It's also quite possible that you'll find what you're looking for in our category of unusual objects that we've named "Unlikely Beer Objects." Is he a bit of a geek? It'll be a mug-shaped USB key. Is he a gamer? The pistol bottle opener or the magnetic bottle cap target. Are you lucky enough to have a swimming pool? A beer pong mat would be perfect. Is your boyfriend the king of the barbecue? The beer belt so he can keep at least one on his belt. A possible idea is to pair it with a Kiss the Cook apron, you can give him as many kisses as you want!

And since it's Valentine's Day, why not give her a ring?

In conclusion, if you want to touch him, be interested in him ❤️

You might be thinking that's all well and good, but this Julien is doing everything he can to try and sell us products from his site. To be honest and sincere, that's not completely false, of course. However, keep in mind that if we created this site and these products, it's precisely to meet these different needs that we've identified year after year.

Personally, I remember perfectly the number of gifts I received on various occasions that I didn't like. Once I opened the wrapping paper and the packaging, I would put on my best forced smile when I saw this "great gift." Then I would say to myself, "What the hell am I going to do with this!"

Normally, with the products on our site, this situation shouldn't arise. In my opinion, your loved one will be particularly touched that you thought of him, but especially that you were interested in him and what he likes.

It's not necessarily the most expensive gifts that are guaranteed to please . He'll likely be surprised that you even thought of this type of gift because, again, some of them can be very "guy-friendly."

Getting to know your man to give him a Valentine's Day gift

To sum up, yes, Valentine's Day has clearly become a commercial holiday. Some people reject it precisely for this reason, and that's completely understandable. They'll generally say, "Yes, but it's all year round and every day that we have to show proof of love."

Of course, this reasoning is perfectly understandable. However, our current lives are often marked by stress and a lack of time to do things. How many times have we said the good old phrase "We'll see later"?

Valentine's Day has the enormous advantage of setting a specific and precise date for us to reconnect as a couple . If you have children, you have moved into the parent category, often to the detriment of your life as a couple.

February 14th is the perfect opportunity to mark the occasion, whether for a day or an evening. Getting together is important, and if we don't allow ourselves this little moment of intimacy, it's often the relationship that suffers.

One day a year, you have the opportunity to treat yourself and treat him. Don't spend hours searching in lots of different stores or on the internet to find the perfect gift. Focus on an idea, see a theme and focus on it. Normally everything should go smoothly. 😍

I hope my advice and perspective have helped you see things more clearly. Don't put too much pressure on yourself because in the end, it always spoils part of the fun. If you liked my article, don't hesitate to leave me a little comment, it's always nice to see people who take the time to do so. And long live Valentine's Day ! 💞 ♥️
