Big Mistakes About Beer: #1: Why Beer Makes You Fat
of reading
We live in a world inundated with information coming at us from all directions. It's becoming increasingly difficult to discern between true news and fake news.
I also feel it is essential to mention that there are many misconceptions and misconceptions about beer . So many that I will write three articles that I will number. I should also point out that I will write these articles in a more direct and personal style because these are reactive topics for me.
I think it's clear that I love beer , and I want everyone to know it. We have beer decor that fully expresses this feeling, especially with this I Love Beer metal sign. Just click on the photo to see it.
I must also say that I'm tired of seeing people constantly criticizing beer. So I wanted to debunk a lot of preconceived notions . For this reason, I will formulate the questions as a not-so-clever person might ask them! Friends of French grammar, you have been warned!
Why does beer make you fat?
Well, actually, if you're gaining weight, it's perhaps because you're eating too much fat , too much sugar , too much alcohol , and too much of everything? Typically, don't come complaining if you've got a big belly because, among other things, you're drinking a 6-pack of beer a day!
More seriously, we must first base ourselves on facts. Of all alcoholic beverages, beer contains the fewest calories . To give you an idea, I'll give you some figures, but first I must clarify one thing. Comparing alcoholic beverages is always complex because the amount of liquid ingested varies depending on the alcohol content of the beverage.
So I'm going to take 2 typical measurements for beer, the half (or 25cl) and the pint (more or less 50cl depending on the bar). You'll finally know the calories in a glass of beer :
- Half a pint of beer = 93 kcal and a pint = 186 kcal
- 25cl of wine (a tulip for those who know) = 234 kcal and therefore 50cl = 468 kcal
- A 25cl cocktail (note that it varies greatly depending on the recipe) is around 400 to 450 kcal
- For strong alcohols , the dose is normally 4cl and it is pastis which is the best at 109 kcal
If you want more details, here is a comparison with the calorie per glass of beer . And if you are wondering how much sugar is in a glass of beer , it is about 5 pieces of sugar in a half .
Undeniably yes, beer is high in calories because it is an alcoholic beverage. It is precisely alcohol that is mainly responsible for the energy intake . However, due to its low alcohol content compared to most other alcoholic beverages, beer is the world champion of diets !
Come on, just for fun we're going to have fun doing several battles:
- Beer vs wine (or beer or wine ) as I see it appear in Google : beer vs wine calories or beer or wine calories . The winner is our favorite drink obviously, not to mention that beer does not contain sulfites ! Afterwards you can also ask yourself the question: beer or wine for the liver ? Advantage beer because it contains less alcohol! ☺️
- Beer vs. whiskey or beer vs. vodka : the winner is always the same, our good old beer ! Hard liquor is high in calories due to its average 40% alcohol...
- Beer vs. Soda , or more specifically, Beer vs. Coke : Which is the most caloric beer or Coke ? Um...do you know how many sugar cubes are in a Coca-Cola ? If not, then it's high time you found out! So you figured it out for yourself: the hoppy lady wins. This also works for the beer or soda comparison .
- Beer or cider : it's a close call. Sweet cider is generally 2% while dry cider is 4%, which is the equivalent of a light beer (Kro is 4.2%). But... cider is quite sweet . So, advantage to beer!
- Beer vs. Water : Yeah, okay, you win, beer has more calories than water . Obviously, it's hard to make it less caloric than water... Well, unless we're talking about brandy, of course! No, I'm not biased, it's false!
- beer vs woman or beer vs man: then we're going to start getting into a real mess and we're going to get angry with some people so I'm bringing out my joker!
Well, you've probably guessed it, beer is the clear winner in this battle. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to buy a round of drinks, right? I think our beer pump would be ideal for that!
Did you know that some people even say they followed a beer diet to lose weight ? Beer makes you lose weight ! Video proof:
After this quick entertainment , a source of confusion some would say, you may nevertheless be entitled to ask yourself this question:
Which beer contains the least sugar?
In fact, this question is more complex than it seems because some drinks are called beer even though, in terms of taste, they don't have much in common with our beloved Gallic cervoise . Or maybe we don't live on the same planet! And then I water down my wine and say to myself, "Okay, all tastes are in nature"... 😇
I read an article that said Molson Canadian 67 , a light beer with 3% alcohol, would be the ideal candidate. Per 1 bottle (341 ml): 67 calories, 2 g of carbohydrates. Here is the description that the Quebec dietitian gives:
“This is one of the first light beers to appear on our market. It is made from a blend of malted barley, a touch of wheat, and four varieties of hops. It is pale blond in color and very sparkling. It has a very light taste and will certainly appeal to women who are less fond of flavorful beers. At 2g of carbohydrates, it is also ideal for diabetics .”
In fact, I'm a little angry with her because she dares to say: "From a nutritional point of view, beer cannot be compared to wine, which is said to have several benefits." She's already implying that beer has no benefits, so we're obviously not really friends. 😠
Fortunately, she then makes up for it by saying: “However, it contains several B vitamins and helps increase good cholesterol in the blood (like most forms of alcohol).” This is very incomplete, but she at least admits that our favorite beer has at least some vitamins!
Then she says: “ The problem with beer , the original version, is that it contains quite a few calories, about 150 calories in a 341 ml beer. A glass of red wine (150 ml) contains about 110 calories.” And there we are not friends again! 😠😠😠
His calculation gives an average of 4.4 kcal per cl of beer while I have seen other sources give rather 3.7 kcal.
Doesn't that seem like a small difference to you? Yeah, okay, except we rarely consume a single 1 cl of beer , do we? The difference after several pints starts to become less negligible.
The big problem, if I may say so, with calculating the calories in beer is that there are an incredible number of beer varieties . For each of these varieties, we find several hundred different recipes with different dosages.
It's a headache to calculate the energy content of beer , but it's a real treat for our taste buds! Beer is incredibly interesting in its diversity! Just like wine, for that matter. 😋
To answer the question of which beer has the least sugar , I think the answer is: the most tasteless drink that someone has ever had the gall to call a beer ! Sorry for the corny answer, but it's true.
I want to give a comparison, but I don't know if this drink still exists. Have you ever had the opportunity to drink Diet Coke Without Caffeine ? When I was younger, I was a big fan and consumer of Coke, and I had the opportunity to taste this version following a purchasing mistake by my parents.
How can anyone believe that by removing the caffeine (I don't know if it really adds flavor) and replacing the sugar with aspartame, we get the same taste ? The memory of that "tasting" still haunts me... 😱
Come on, let's move on to the last untruth which is still linked to the theme of this article:
Have a beer belly
Have you, like me, already heard these expressions:
- abs kro
- crowned
- beer drinker's belly
- beer belly or beer belly
- beer belly
- drinker's belly
I'm almost 100% sure you know at least one of them. The annoying thing is that all of these expressions are in everyday language . They give beer a bad reputation and even worse, they give beer drinkers a guilty conscience .
If you're a man like me, you know what I'm talking about. You know that little voice that tells you it's not necessarily good to consume beer regularly. I was reading an article in a men's magazine the other day. The opening line was: " Beer belly is a common phenomenon , but why beer ?"
There, we can see directly that they are shooting red hot bullets at the beer ! Grrrrr! 😠😠😠So I have to explain 2-3 little things.
Studies show that beer has a tendency to cause bloating. This is due to its higher carbon dioxide content than other beverages. When we consume beer, our digestive system is particularly stressed by fermentation and the release of gas . This can cause bloating.
The distension of the stomach due to this fermentation would increase the sensation of hunger and amplify the quantity of food ingested. In addition, beer contains alcohol, the calories ingested can have the bad idea of being stored as fat . And by chance, mainly at the level of the stomach .
Let's be brief and precise: it's not the beer you drink that will make you gain weight. Instead, what do you think of these potential facts:
- I only drank one beer but I ate a pizza / a kebab and fries / a burger and fries
- I only drank one beer but I stuffed myself with biscuits and aperitif cakes, not forgetting the 20 slices of sausage, peanuts, cashew nuts, etc.
- I drank quite a few beers, I admit I didn't count too much
- I only drink a few beers a week but I don't do any sports.
I could come up with dozens of such facts. The idea I wanted to convey is that it's not beer itself that makes you fat, but rather:
- the eating behavior that can accompany beer consumption
- the amount of beer consumed
- an unbalanced diet
- lack of exercise
This article wasn't intended to debunk beer and the annoying weight gain adage. Rather, I wanted to highlight my own opinion on the matter. Beer isn't bad for your health , and like any alcohol, consumption should be moderate .
Since I'm thinking of you, here's a way to reduce your beer consumption : have a container that's not too big!
Example with ourGothic Helmeted Skull Beer Cup
It's not the beer that's making you fat, Coco, but rather all the excesses you might have around it! So take control of yourself and don't blame that poor little beer that hasn't done anything to you. It's just waiting to give you pleasure ! The direction to take is straight ahead, the path of the right balance ! 😉
There is also a technique to combine "sport" and beer , it's beer pong ! No, actually, I don't think the aim of this game is really to exert yourself!
If you've already read some of my other articles before this one, I hope my more "frank" style hasn't shocked you. It's about writing more emotionally , a bit like transcribing an oral conversation. Well, that's it, I think I've finished this topic, but I'm already looking forward to the next ones!

Bravo! :)
